If I was there when you were laughing and celebrating,
I can be there when you are crying and mourning.
When you were on top of the World, I was there,
When the World is on top of you, I will be there.
If I could eat the party jollof rice,
Then I can eat the bread of sorrows.
If I took a slice of your joy,
Then I can take a take a slice of your sorrow.
I exist on the mountains,
I also exist in the valleys.
I may want the sun to shine a bit longer,
But when the rain comes, it won’t wash me away.
We can cry in the rain,
Or we can dance as the rain drops fall.
But you will not be a solitary figure.
For I will be right beside you,
Holding your hand,
Catching the rain drops as they fall, together.
And after all the rains, the thunderstorms, the dark winds,
when the first glimpses of sunlight start to appear again,
and the rays of the sun pierce through the leaves of the trees,
I’ll be standing there, waiting to welcome them with you,
My friend.
“One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” – Proverbs 18:24 (NIV)
